Queen of the Undergrowth
Queen of the Undergrowth
The rare Queen of Sheba orchid growing in a National Park outside of Albany WA. Orchid enthusiasts and Photographers come as far as the Eastern States to find these flora jewels who only open their petals when the conditions are just right when the sun is shining to their liking. They bloom for a short 2 months. These tiny royals are a threatened species and fiercely protected.
After 2 failed attempts at finding the orchid, on the 3rd attempt I bumped into a fellow orchid enthusiast and he showed me where they were growing. I was so surprised to see that they were growing in gravel soil on the side of the dusty gravel road! The last place I would have looked for them.
This is my creative edit of my original photo. The tiny Queen standing strong and straight amongst the gravel and the dust enjoying the warmth of the sun on her spotty regal petals.
